I found Oscar the Frigate bird floating in the Gulf near Seahorse Key where hundreds of frigate birds gather for the summer. He was missing a few feathers, soaked and under weight. Frigates do not have webbed feet and landing on the water can often be a death sentence.
I rehabilitated Oscar for several weeks. He had an excellent appetite the entire time. He ate many small fish and occasionally attempted to eat my fingers. When he seemed to be fit, I allowed him on a perch to see if he would attempt to fly. He would occasionally stretch and flap his wings but would not attempt to leave his perch.
I contacted someone familiar with sea bird rehabilitation who reminded me that a frigate must have water and wind in order to inspire him to fly. With this in mind I transported him back to Seahorse Key and you can see the results in the above video. Oscar flew directly into a flock of near by frigate birds who were riding the thermals over the key. We soon lost track of which one he was.
Other than his occasional savage bites , rehabilitating Oscar was a great experience.
UNBELIEVABLE !!!
Watch the driver Dolphin incite fish to jump out of the water, then watch waiting dolphin jump out of the water to catch them in midair.
